SMBC Minister of Music

Job Description
Principal Function: The Minister of Music develops and leads the music ministry of the church, in consultation with the Senior Pastor and other team members, in a way that is consistent with the mission, values, and theology of the church. This part-time position will report to the Senior Pastor.


Responsibilities:


  • Directs the planning, organizing, conducting of a comprehensive music program in preparing groups, soloists and choirs for internal and external ministry.
    Plans for and practices (in person) on a weekly basis for all music utilized in the worship service.

  • Supervises the work of paid music ministry staff and volunteers, and maintains weekly
    attendance records for payroll purposes.

  • Assists in the selection and provision of appropriate music for weddings, funerals, special programs and other church-related activities.

  • Works with the pastor in selecting music for regular and special worship services including funerals and annual days.

  • Works with special event committees on special music needs in the church.

  • Secures a replacement to accommodate vacation schedules when music staff members are unable to be present at any regular worship service.

  • Coordinates logistics with other guest musicians and choirs who may visit the church.

  • Coordinates workshops and other learning opportunities to enhance the church music ministry.

  • Monitors and schedules the necessary maintenance and upkeep of the musical instruments.

  • Must present a positive image of the church and refrain from any inappropriate activities that bring disrepute to the church.

  • Works cooperatively and constructively with church leadership.

  • Accepts constructive suggestions/criticism in an open manner.

  • Performs additional responsibilities as needed or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications for Minister of Music

  • Minimum of five years of experience leading a church music program
  • Ability to effectively communicate with others
  • Ability to play wide range of music styles including contemporary, traditional and classic hymns
  • Ability to read music preferred; however, be familiar with the hymns or have ability to play them by ear
  • Possess strong leadership, organization and time management skills
  • Dependable, responsible and have good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be a team player with the rest of the staff and congregation
  • A background check will be required.

Youth Pastor (bivocational)

Job Description
Principal function: The Youth Pastor will lead and organize the Youth Ministry by implementing fellowship, worship, Biblical teaching, discipleship, and evangelism. The Youth Pastor will be the catalyst in establishing a doctrinally and operationally sound Youth Ministry that will provide essential benefits to the youth in preparation for the subsequent phases of their lives. This position will report to the Senior Pastor.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead, teach, and/or preach at any Wednesday night youth programming and on Sundays when called upon by the Senior Pastor.
  • Recruit youth from SMBC and the community to participate in the Youth Ministry.
  • Regularly visit/support youth at their respective schools and/or extracurricular activities.
  • Coordinate activities with the Youth Ministry leaders.
  • Develop and implement retreats, mission experiences, and other activities to help youth grow in their relationship with Christ, sense of servant discipleship, and mission.
  • Develop youth leaders to minister to other youth.
  • Set the calendar for youth activities and events.
  • Coordinate with the Minister of Music and Youth Usher leaders to increase and maintain participation in those ministries.
  • Be available to minister to and counsel youth and their parents.
  • Develop and encourage ties between the youth and the Tennessee Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention.
  • Work with the ministerial staff, appropriate ministries and program leaders in planning, evaluating and coordinating the youth ministry of the church.
  • Must present a positive image of the church and refrain from any inappropriate activities that bring disrepute to the church.
  • Work cooperatively and constructively with church leadership.
  • Accept constructive suggestions/criticism in an open manner.
  • Other duties as required and requested by the Senior Pastor.

Minimum Qualifications for Youth Pastor

  • Bachelor's degree is preferred
  • Previous youth ministry experience is desired
  • Possess strong leadership, organization and time management skills Possess outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to lead by example
  • A background check will be required.
